Why can you reclaim bank charges?

Excessive charges are deemed unlawful so the whole charge plus interest can be claimed back.

If the bank charged you for:

A bounced cheque
A failed direct debit
Sending you a letter

The law says the charges must reflect the banks losses only, no more.

All the money the bank has charged you in bank charges over the last SIX years (possibly longer) can be reclaimed, plus interest and in some cases compensation for stress or suffering.

Compensation due to stress or suffering would be if bank charges had affected your relationship or health or maybe lost your job, home, business or maybe even caused bankruptcy.

Claims have been stopped by the OFT (unless extreme hardship can be proved) while a court case is in progress. However it is still advisable to start your claim so that when a decision is made your claim can be settled.

If you do it yourself, it can be time consuming with letters to write and maybe even taking the bank to court.
